CONTENT WARNING: Parental abuse, suicidal ideation.Edgar was born the second of three children to David and Eliza Poe--that was not his birth name, and those would not be the people who raised him for most of his life. Tensions within the marriage and frustration at having to raise three children culminated in David leaving the family; Eliza subsequently tried her best to bring up three children on her own.Unfortunately, tragedy struck when one day, Edgar discovered that he had an involuntary ability. He enjoyed writing stories, and tried his hand at coming up with a murder mystery. When he gave his completed story to his mother to read, she became trapped within Black Cat in the Rue Morgue, never to return and having presumably died within the tale.The Poe children were separated after this and raised by different families. Edgar was taken in by the Allans, and although he adopted their surname, he was never truly regarded as the pair's child. He frequently butted heads with John Allan, confused and disoriented by the way the man would treat him: one moment he would be spoiled with clothes and money, the other he'd bear the brunt of verbal and psychological abuse.This constant string of failed attachment to parental figures led to a general distrust and wariness of other people, causing him to withdraw from forming meaningful relationships with others in school - a problem not helped by his apparent ego, refusing to see anyone as his equal in the subjects he excelled in.

Drawing inspiration from the ever-darkening corners of his mind, Edgar continued to develop his writing skills in secret, using his new-found ability as personal shelters to hide away in when he felt overwhelmed with the world at large. Instead of becoming an author, he hoped to pursue a future as a detective and set his eyes on this career as his new dream.Everything seemed to be going well; Edgar excelled in his studies and seemed to have a promising future, even entering an investigative competition in the hopes it would cement him as a man with world-class investigative skills. However, during this very competition he would meet and be bested by Ranpo. Edgar had never known defeat before and could not bear to accept it, the loss mentally crushing him as he withdrew from the few people he'd known and heavily considered ending his own life, torn between feelings of intense hatred and infatuation and simply wanting to be free of them. What stopped him was an epiphany: he had to take back the life that had been stolen from him.Thus, Edgar spent years developing a plan for revenge that involved joining the Guild, climbing up the ranks to become a Master Architect, and sailing across the ocean solely to challenge Ranpo again with the intent of killing him. This revenge would fail, however, and Edgar would be left confused yet enamored by Ranpo's declaration that he was the only person to ever come close to his intellect. As a result, he ended up becoming a trusted friend and ally to Ranpo.After the Guild's fall, he would attempt to wipe his hands clean of it and pick up gigs as a mystery and horror writer for magazines, still hoping to get the better of Ranpo through his mysteries one day.

Unsatisfied and frustrated with his purely physical relationship with Ranpo, Edgar's life becomes entangled with Fyodor's as he builds a connection seemingly far more equal and balanced.
However, Fyodor has plans for Edgar and ends up convincing him to attack Ranpo at the Agency, manipulating the situation to get him arrested and cause his life to spiral downhill. Edgar's inhibitions are worn down and he is changed for the worse; he breaks free and targets Fyodor as his new archenemy.
Despite fully intending to kill him, Edgar is surprised to see the other's delight at his appearance and murderous intent. This leads him to join Decay of Angel, fully embracing his disdain for a society that threw him away and a detective that seemingly never cared for him the way he wanted.}..   HUNTING DOGS

A few days later, Edgar is attacked and left for dead with no choice but to become a vampire. One of the Ancients, Obsidian, approaches him with the offer to which Edgar agrees, and is turned into a Vampire of Wrath.
Now an immortal, he has to come to terms with living as an undying being, as well as the urge for violence and bloodlust that come with being a vampire of Obsidian's blood.}..   VERSE FIVE
